The rising cost of internet data across Nigeria is increasingly disrupting online learning for university students, forcing many to miss virtual lectures, delay assignments, and rely on public Wi‑Fi hotspots to stay connected.
Students across several tertiary institutions say frequent data price increases have made it difficult to participate fully in digital academic activities. Online lectures, research, and submission of assignments now require more financial commitment than many students can afford.
According to some students interviewed, the situation is worse for those living off‑campus, where access to stable Wi‑Fi is limited. “Sometimes I have to choose between buying food and buying data,” said a 200‑level student who preferred to remain anonymous.
Education experts warn that the situation could widen inequality among students, particularly those from low‑income backgrounds. They argue that while universities continue to adopt digital learning tools, limited access to affordable internet remains a major barrier.
Efforts by network providers to introduce student-friendly data plans have been inconsistent, leaving many learners to depend on personal resources. Until more sustainable solutions are implemented, students fear that online learning may remain inaccessible to a large segment of the population.
